This Page shows a selection of costumes and head dresses from Within The Shadow Of The Tree. Some costumes that were designed and made, did not make it into the film as the scenes were cut, never the less they were made and this will give you an opportunity to see them, as they still required as much work as the ones that were used.

The Feather Man Costume

The Feather Man is a character we see in the tree city scene, he is just a background character but his costume is still a representation of what he dose for a living.
Before Lord Akrafa took over Marimdorph the most precious thing was rear bird feathers, the law stated that if you find them it was ok to keep them and use them as trade, some people did try and catch rear birds for their feathers but if they were caught they would suffer the wrath of the Fintailed Tolkers a tribe of bird type people that are able to communicate with the birds and protect them.
So the Feather Man Trades in rear feathers, he carries them on a long stick over his shoulder allowing people to see his wares.

The Small One’s Mothers Ceremonial Birthing Costume

The Small One’s mothers ceremonial birthing costume was one of the costumes that was made, although the headdress was never used. The dress stayed the same and was used in the forest scene as part of the woodland dress, only the headdress changed to a more practical design.

The original ceremonial birthing headdress was very ornate and detailed but it was impractical for a woodland person to wear. The thought behind the colour and general look of it was that she was now the mate of a Nomadic person who lived in the desert, so even though her physical appearance was different to her partners, she would have worn his tribal design and colours. Because of the story and pace the birthing scene was cut so we only saw the Small one’s mother in the forest scene, so the emphasis was on the fact that he, The Evil Father was a desert Nomadic and she was a woodland person who’s ethnic roots were completely different.
